There is no question that the smell of cigarette smoke is hard to get rid of. Smoke lingers in or on carpets, drapes, walls, cupboards and other hard surfaces. These unpleasant odors are caused by what is now known as third hand smoke. While it may seem like the smoke drifts away, particles in it actually stay in the area and cling to exposed surfaces. Third hand smoke is not only annoying, but it can cause health problems. There are several ways you can remove cigarette odor yourself.
1. Air out the room
Open the windows and run the fans. This quick fix is good is you are expecting guests and need to do something fast. While this provides some much needed fresh air, it won’t eliminate residue clinging to surfaces.
2. Sprinkle baking soda or carpet cleaner on your rugs and then vacuum
This will deodorize your carpet and help get rid of the cigarette smoke smell, but if it doesn’t work you may need to rent a carpet cleaner or call a professional.
3. Scrub!
Repaint, but first scrub down the walls with water and a mild abrasive cleanser to remove the cigarette smoke residue. If you don’t do this, the smell could seep through.
4. Extensively clean everything in the affected rooms
Scrub down walls and clean hard surfaces such as linoleum floors with a solution of one part water and three parts vinegar. Clean drapes, carpets, pillows or furniture according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Replace the light bulbs because smoke residue settles on them and the cigarette odor becomes more apparent as they heat up. This may take a long time but it will remove the residue.
5. Use Closure Clean
This is a fast, modern, cost effective and easy way to eliminate the smell of cigarette smoke. This cleaning agent not only destroys odors, but eliminates the cause as it also targets fungus, bacteria, viruses and more. After the active treatment is completed, the space is completely safe for both humans and animals.
